Medellin´s Comuna 13:

This is the most important and popular viewpoints for the people of Medellin, located in one of the city´s districts where the armed conflict had a major impact at the late 90s and early 2000s. In 2002, under a far-right government, Medellin´s Comuna 13 became the site of a large-scale military operation, both aerial and ground carried out with the approval of the fascist President at the time “Alvaro Uribe” and his Minister of Defense, “Martha Lucia”. This operation was an unprecedented raid, never seen before in Colombia, involving the military, the air force, and paramilitary groups.

As a result, the communities living in Comuna 13 came under fire from the ground and the air, with heavy weaponry. The paramilitary groups then used a list of individuals previously selected by the Colombian Public Prosecutor’s Office to track down various people deemed to be military target, with the aim of capturing, dismembering and disappearing them. As a result, many of the disappeared, are believed to be buried in the upper areas of Comuna 13´s geography, their location remaining an open secret among locals, who knows where the bodies were buried.

We will start by an overview through a cable -an integrated transport system in Medellin- to see Comuna 13 from above and get a sweeping view of the neighborhood from the air.

We will continue with a walk into Comuna 13 in Medellin, exploring the famous “Ruta del Graffiti” -Graffiti Route-, which showcases the transformation and artistic expressions of the local community. The messages on the murals tell stories that are both heart-wrenching and full of hope and resilience.

Climb through Comuna 13´s escalators:

On our tour of Comuna 13, we will visit the escalators inside of Comuna 13, which are the only ones in all Latin America to be in an urban area of this size. We’ll take the escalators up to the highest point, a symbol of Comuna 13’s transformation.

Visit Comuna 13´s viewpoints:

We’ll take a tour of the areas offering views of Medellín city and photo-worthy, Instagram-friendly viewpoints; we’ll also see examples of places that were once plagued by violence and crime but have since been transformed into vibrant, thriving communities.

During the tour, our guide will share stories and insights into the history and culture of the area, a neighborhood rich in history, art and resilience.
